Admission Requirements Checklist

Your application must be complete with all admission requirements satisfied to be considered for admission.  All applicants must submit the following materials, as indicated, for their application to be complete and forwarded for departmental review.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to assure all required materials are received prior to the deadline.  Please do not send any application materials to individual departments.

All materials become the property of UTSA and are maintained at the Graduate School.  If you submitted an application over a year ago, you may be required to submit new updated materials.  We do not accept copies of documents as "Official" documents.

We do not waive the application fee.  Approved McNair program waivers are to be submitted through the certified McNair Official.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE/LETTER OF INTENT:

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS:

Submit official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework, including course work taken as a non-degree student, must be submitted.  Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States or have proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution. Accrediting Agencies list from the U.S. Department of Education.  Student printed or downloaded copies of transcripts are not accepted.  

UTSA students and alumni do not need to submit UTSA transcripts.

All documents become the property of UTSA and will not be returned.

  • If you are currently attending a university, a final transcript must be submitted upon completion of your course work.  If you have completed your degree, the award of degree must be noted on the transcript or you must submit a separate diploma.
  • If your school does not release official transcripts directly to students, you must request that the school mail the official copy directly to UTSA – Graduate School.
  • All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English.  Transcripts in the original language must accompany all translated documents.  Uncertified translations, or translations by students, will not be accepted.  Submittal of Secondary School (high school) transcripts or results is not required.
  • US Citizens or Permanent Residents who have earned university level credit from a foreign institution is required to submit in addition to official transcripts a foreign credential evaluation from an approved company.  An approved evaluation requires a detailed course-by-course evaluation, summaries will not be accepted.

DEGREE STATEMENT - OFFICIAL EVIDENCE OF DEGREE EXPECTED:

The degree statement is required if official transcripts of previous or current study do not include the award of degree, include a certified copy of the diploma or other official evidence that the degree has been awarded.

The degree statement is from your current advisor stating upon successful completion of the final semester you will be eligible to obtain your degree.  The letter/memo needs to be on official institution letter from your advisor name, title and signature. 

International Applicants:   If your diploma is not yet available, you may still apply for admission, but you will be required to provide an official copy of your diploma along with the official final transcript showing all courses and grades, and an English translation, if applicable, once you are admitted, in order to be cleared to enroll.

EVALUATION OF FOREIGN CREDENTIALS:

U.S. Citizens (Domestic) or permanent residents who have earned university level credit from foreign institutions are required to submit all official transcripts from foreign institutions along with an evaluation of the transcripts from an approved UTSA Foreign Credential Agency. An approved evaluation requires a detailed course-by-course evaluation. Summaries will not be accepted.

The Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA) is a private corporation that provides evaluations of foreign school credentials. If you need a request form, click on Application Information and Instructions, scroll down to item 7 and click on Printable FCSA form.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:

Two or three letters of recommendation (varies by program of interest) may be required for submission from faculty members acquainted with you, who can provide an assessment of your likelihood of success at the graduate level in your field of study. The online recommendation form is available on the online application, you must register the recommender. 

If unable to secure recommendations from faculty members, contact a Graduate Advisor for your program of interest to see whether a recommendation from those familiar with your professional performance might be acceptable.

OFFICIAL TEST SCORES: GRE OR GMAT AS REQUIRED BY THE PROGRAM:

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) institutional code for the University of Texas at San Antonio is 6919.

Please submit official GRE or GMAT test scores depending on your program of interest.

  • Official test scores are required and must be requested from the testing organization to be sent to UTSA directly. 
  • Photocopies or scanned copies of test scores from ETS may be sent, but will be used only until official scores are received.  Web scores are not acceptable.
  • GRE or GMAT scores should reflect test score date taken within five years.  Older scores are not valid or accepted.
  • Be aware official test scores are received by UTSA Graduate School between two to four weeks after request from the testing organization.

UTSA offers preparatory workshops, which are a fraction of the cost, through the Office of Extended Education.   You may contact them for additional information.

OFFICIAL TOEFL / IELTS TEST SCORES (INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS):

Non-U.S. Citizens or nonpermanent residents will be processed as international applicants. 

International applicants are required to prove proficiency in the English Language by taking either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as measures of English language proficiency.   TOEFL scores may be waived for international students from countries where English is the official language spoken; or for noncitizens of the United States earning a bachelor’s degree or higher in the United States (regionally accredited) or other countries where English is the official language as indicated in the Graduate Catalog.

TOEFL/IELTS scores should reflect test score date taken within two years.  Older scores are not valid or accepted.

After receiving the immigration document (I-20/DS-2019), each student must apply through a United States Embassy or Consulate for the appropriate visa to enter the United States.  Any student entering the United States using documents issued by UTSA must register for the semester for which admission is granted. 

Verification of arrival and enrollment is electronically tracked through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) during the required International Student Orientation.  Any failure to arrive at UTSA and enroll as a student will be reported to the U.S. Government.
