Graduate Student Appreciation Week 2017

Graduate Student Appreciation Week (GSAW) is an annual event organized by The Graduate School – an entire week of events for UTSA Graduate Students – highlighting special social and networking sessions, workshops, and plenty of opportunities for FREE FOOD! This spring, GSAW will take place March 20th – March 24th. This will be our largest GSAW ever with over 30 separate events taking place thanks to our amazing campus partners: Graduate Student Association, Office of International Programs, College of Engineering, Tomás Rivera Center, UTSA Libraries, Student Activities, and UTSA Athletics.

Below is a complete list of events along with dates, times, locations, and event descriptions.  If you are a College of Engineering graduate student, please visit the COE GSAW page to view additional events just for you!



MARCH 20

3MT Prelims | Main Campus, GSR 1.204 | 9:00 am - 1:00 pm **Closed Session**
The 3MT (3-Minute Thesis) Preliminary Competition round will determine which 20 students move to the Finals Round on Friday, March 24.  This is a closed session and is only available for pre-registered 3MT competitors.

Palettas at the Main | Main Campus, MB 1.210 | 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Office of International Programs is offering FREE palettas for graduate students.  A variety of flavors are available.  Come by and cool down with a yummy paletta!


MARCH 21

Get Rowdy Picnic | Main Campus, GSR 1.204 | 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Come join The Graduate School for the Get Rowdy Picnic in the Graduate Student Professional Development Center.  Grab your free hot dogs, popcorn, chips, and drink and eat inside the GSPD Center or under a tree in the Graduate School and Research (GSR) Building Courtyard.  Rowdy will be at the Center from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm to take a #RowdySelfie with you so don't miss out! 

Trail Mix Tuesday | Main Campus, GSR 1.204 | 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Get your trail mix to-go! Our make-your-own trail mix bar provides a healthy snack to get you through your next class or study session.

Coffee and Coloring | Main and Downtown Campus Libraries | 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Graduate students can de-stress with some coloring pages scanned straight from UTSA Libraries’ Special Collections. And because all that coloring can work up quite the appetite, free coffee, tea, cocoa and snacks will be provided in the following UTSA Library graduate study rooms: African American Reading Room (JPL 3.01.56), Graduate Quiet Study (JPL 3.03.56) and the Graduate Study Room at the Downtown Library (BV 2.314 P5). Available while supplies last. Enjoy!

PopArt Research Design: Infographs | Main Campus, GSR 1.218 | 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm | REGISTER HERE (attend in-person) | REGISTER HERE (attend online)
Give your research a pop of color and unique design by displaying your research through Infographs.  This session offered by The Graduate School will instruct you how to develop an Infograph and how to best utilize the image to showcase your research.

Professional Head Shots | Main Campus, GSR 1.204 | 10:00 am - 11:30 am | REGISTER HERE
Need a professional headshot for a conference presentation, online webinar or professional social media profile? Come on over to the Graduate Student Professional Development Center (GSR 1.204) and have your photo taken by our photographers. Please bring the professional attire of your choice with you to The Center. Changing areas will be provided as needed.

Stop by the Tomas Rivera Center on your way to class for their grab-and-go Pop-up Cafe.  Free snacks and beverages are available under the blue awning on the south side of the Multidisciplinary Studies Building.

Starbucks Social and Coffee Tasting | Downtown Campus, FSB Commons | 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
Join the Graduate Student Association and Student Activities for coffee sampling and free Starbucks coffee in the Frio Street Building Commons -- while supplies last!

Do you know the tips and tricks on how to have a successful interview? How about the rules of engagement for salary negotiation? In this short 1 hour workshop, Vice Provost and Dean of The Graduate School, Dr. Agbenyiga, will set you up for success and help you understand the 'do's' and 'don'ts' of both interviewing and salary negotiation. If you desire to become a powerhouse salary negotiator in future job searches, you will not want to miss this session.

Chili's Social | Main Campus, Chili's - University Center | 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Come enjoy a break before or between classes and join the Graduate Student Association (GSA) for a social at Chili's Too in the University Center.  The GSA has reserved the back room and Aramark has donated free drinks, chips, and salsa.  


MARCH 24

3MT Finals | Main Campus, UC North Retama Auditorium | 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
20 Master's and Doctoral students from varied disciplines will compete and present their research in 3 minutes or face disqualification.  The first place winner will receive a $1500 3MT Fellowship award and have the opportunity to compete on the national stage.  Come cheer on and support your favorite participant!

GSAW Awards Ceremony & Reception | Main Campus, UC North Retama Auditorium | 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The Vice Provost and Dean of The Graduate School will announce the 3MT winners and will award the Graduate School Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Graduate Advising recipients.  Outstanding individuals who support excellence in UTSA graduate education will be recognized as well.  A reception will follow.

Grad School Night at Roadrunner Baseball | Main Campus, Roadrunner Baseball Field | 6:00 pm
Join UTSA Athletics in appreciating our Graduate Students at the March 24th home game against Old Dominion.  Graduate students will have the opportunity to take part in game day activities and tailgate games will be available as well.  The first 25 students to visit the GSPD Center (GSR 1.204) during GSAW will receive UTSA Athletics give-a-ways and a $10.00 concessions coupon for the baseball game (provided by Student Activities). Jesus Romo, doctoral student in Biology, will throw out the first pitch.  Students get into the game for free with UTSA Student ID -- guests are $7.00.  GO RUNNERS!
