UTSA has approved two new graduate certificates in Real Estate Finance and Voice Pedagogy
The University of Texas at San Antonio has approved two new graduate certificates that will begin this fall. The certificate in real estate finance and development is a 12 hour program (4 courses) under the College of Business. The voice pedagogy certificate is aimed at current and future students with an interest in singing or voice training as teachers and is housed under the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.
Real Estate Finance and Development
This certificate housed under the College of Business’s Department of Finance is aimed at professionals in the real estate or construction community who desire further knowledge in this field. The program is designed for prospective graduate level students who already hold a bachelor’s degree or current graduate students who would like additional specialized training in this industry. Previous business degree holders are welcome to apply as well as current UTSA students in master’s programs in Urban Planning, Architecture, or Public Administration.
This twelve hour certificate meets a growing need for professionals in San Antonio who want further development in the growing real estate, home building and construction industry. This industry is 2nd largest economic generator both regionally in San Antonio and Texas and nationally. Coursework will focus on market analysis, foundations of finance for entrepreneurs, and real estate investment. No other university in San Antonio offers this program.
Additional benefits for students in this certificate include the ability to attend guest lectures and participate in community development programs. Students who are already enrolled in appropriate graduate degree programs are eligible to fill out a form to apply for this certificate. Incoming students will need to apply as a special graduate degree seeking student and meet all university wide requirements as outlined in the graduate catalog under certificates. Pending the prospective student background, prerequisite courses may be required. Financial aid is not available under special graduate degree seeking status.
Voice Pedagogy
Potential and current singers, choral directors and speech pathologists who work with singers to enhance their pedagogy skills in a short time frame are encouraged to apply for this certificate under the Department of Music. The sole focus is pedagological aspects of singing. Students may continue courses after the certificate convenes to lead towards a Master in Music degree if they so choose.
Similar programs across the nation have attracted active teachers and singers regionally, nationally and internationally. Currently the Southern Region of the United States does not offer such a unique, cutting-edge program, so it will be attractive to active diverse singers and teachers city and region wide. Working professionals in these fields can pursue this certificate without a long-term commitment to advance their immediate knowledge and skills. Students will have the opportunity to research under the UTSA Vocal Arts Laboratory as well and will have access to state-of-the-art equipment including the EGGS for Singers portable electroglottograph; digital mixers; speech, recording and analysis software, as well as a sound booth.
This is a fifteen hour (5 courses) certificate program including a capstone course offered after completion. Twelve of the fifteen hours can be applied towards a Masters of Music degree upon completion. Students have access to private instruction and the faculty to student ratio is quite small. Students must meet university wide requirements including a 3.0 on the last 60 hours of coursework, hold a bachelor’s degree in Music in Voice Performance, submit 3 letters of recommendation from established professionals commenting on appropriateness of graduate study in music and a copy of an audition in digital format (CD or DVD preferred) demonstrating the mastery in pedagogy and performance.
