VIP Admissions Program for Current UTSA Students and Alumni

The VIP Graduate Admissions Program was established to retain talented University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) undergraduate students and alumni in pursuit of their graduate education. Both domestic and international students who have completed a minimum of 90 semester credit hours can qualify. Additional eligibility requirements can be found below.

The VIP program is based on faculty nomination. The nomination serves as the highest form of recommendation. As a benefit, selected VIP candidates are fast tracked through the graduate admissions process to include an abbreviated application. All test scores and supplemental documentation for the graduate application are waived including statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and resume/CV.

The VIP admissions program is limited to Master’s programs (thesis/non-thesis option, or internship option) only. Many but not all programs at UTSA participate. A faculty can contact the Associate Dean or Department Chair to determine VIP Admissions Program participation status.

VIP Nomination and Admissions Deadlines

Nomination deadlines are specifically for the faculty nomination form submission. The subsequent VIP application deadlines apply to both domestic and international VIP applicants.

Please note, if you are nominating an international alumnus who is residing in their home country, the individual will most likely need to complete the full student visa process. As you know this process can take time. We encourage you to complete the nomination form and highly encourage your VIP nominee to complete the subsequent application as soon as possible to ensure successful navigation of the visa process.

Faculty Nomination Process

Once a faculty member has identified a potential VIP nominee The Graduate School highly recommends the faculty member meet with the nominee to confirm and/or encourage the student or alumni’s interest in pursuing a graduate degree, VIP eligibility and collect important information for the nomination form.

Please note nomination forms can be initiated by non-tenure track faculty as well as faculty members from outside the graduate program discipline. In these cases, the nomination form must include a co-sponsor tenure or tenure track faculty member from the admitting graduate program department.

The nomination process is as follows:

  1. Faculty can access the Nomination Form(s) here:

*Please note, progress on the nomination form can be saved and resumed later by clicking, ‘Save my progress and resume later’ at the top or bottom of the electronic form. Faculty will need to provide an email address and establish a password. The faculty member can then access this form by opening a new Nomination Form and clicking ‘Resume a previously saved form’ at the top or bottom of the page.

  2. To complete the nomination form, faculty should be prepared to provide:
    • Student First and Last Name

    • Cumulative UTSA GPA. This can be found in BANNER on SHATERM screen
    • Discipline GPA. Contact the Department for assistance with discipline GPA calculation.
    • Current students do not need to provide transcripts as these documents are accessible for review by The Graduate School.
    • If Alumni has attended another institution(s) after graduating from UTSA, please provide an unofficial transcript for each institution attended.
  3. Please provide the co-sponsor discipline specific tenure/tenure track faculty name, college, department and signature in the space provided IF:
    • The nomination is originated by a non-tenure track faculty
    • The nomination is originated by a faculty member that is outside of the graduate program discipline.
  4. Once required fields are complete, faculty member should click ‘Submit’
  5. This will take the faculty member to a Print Preview page.
  6. Faculty member should PRINT the form and forward the nomination form packet to the faculty co-sponsor if applicable, Department Chair and Associate Dean for signatures.
  7. Associate Dean then forwards hardcopy nomination form and any applicable supporting documents (i.e., alumni unofficial transcripts, application fee documentation) to the Graduate School for processing
