International

General Tips for International Applicants

  • Know your application type: Non-U.S. citizens or non-permanent residents are considered international applicants. U.S. citizens including those who live in U.S. territories and permanent residents are considered a domestic applicant.
  • Pay special attention to your deadline dates. The deadline dates will vary by applicant type (domestic vs. international), program level (master's vs. doctoral) and program. Given the complexity of applying as an international student to include the additional time needed to navigate the visa process if accepted, early submission of the application is highly recommended.
  • A year to six months prior to application we recommend emailing, coordinate a skype session or phone call with your program’s Graduate Advisor of Record (GAR) and begin building rapport. Be prepared to discuss how your research interests and career goals align with the program. Ask about previous cohorts and the average academic profile (i.e., GPA and GRE/GMAT) so you can best assess your admissions portfolio strengths and determine opportunities for improvement.
  • Admissions requirements vary by program. Pay close attention to detail. Show the admissions committee your potential for professionalism and commitment to the program by following the application directions. Ensure your application is free of misspellings and grammatical errors. When in doubt, reach out to graduateadmissions@utsa.edu.

Additional Requirements

  • International applications submitted by March 15, 2019, may use an external agency for foreign credential evaluations OR send all documents to the Graduate School for an internal evaluation. Starting March 16, 2019 all international applicants must utilize an approved foreign credentialing agency for evaluations as part of the admission requirements.
  • An approved evaluation requires a detailed course-by-course evaluation. Summaries will not be accepted. The Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA) is a private corporation that provides evaluations of foreign school credentials and is a preferred vendor with UTSA. The application is available at: Application for Credentials Evaluation.
  • In addition to meeting the general requirements for admission, applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate sufficient competency in English to study effectively at UTSA. Minimum scores for admission consideration is 6.5 on the IELTS or scores of 79 or 60 for internet or paper versions of the TOEFL respectively. Additional information regarding English proficiency can be reviewed in the UTSA Graduate Catalog.
  • Additional requirements may apply.
