The Graduate School is pleased to announce the new Outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar Award. The award will be presented annually to two (2) postdoctoral scholars at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) who demonstrate excellence in research, communication, and leadership. Each award includes a certificate and $1,500 to the recipient. The awardees will be announced during Postdoctoral Appreciation Week (September 20-24, 2021).

Eligibility: This award recognizes outstanding and innovative work by postdoctoral scholars. UTSA defines a postdoc as meeting both of the following qualifications (see Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and  UTSA Research):

1. Holds a recent doctoral degree, generally awarded within the last 5 years, such as:

  • PhD or PhD-equivalent (e.g., ScD or DEng), or
  • Professional degree in a medical or related field (MD, DDS, DO, DVM), or
  • Foreign degree equivalent to a U.S. doctoral degree

2. Has a limited-term appointment, generally no more than 5 years:

  • Primarily for training in research or scholarship, and
  • Working under the supervision of a senior scholar in a unit affiliated with your institution.

Nominations must include the items below. Self-nominations are welcome. Nominations should be sent from the nominator to PostDocs@utsa.edu by the application close date.

  • Nominator name, department, title, and email address
  • Statement completed by nominator(s) (up to 1,000 words) explaining how the nominee is an outstanding postdoctoral scholar. The statement should demonstrate the nominee’s excellence in research and active roles in teamwork and leadership.

Submission Process: Nominees should compile their personal statement and CV into a single PDF and send to PostDocs@utsa.edu. Do not include nominations. Nominations should be sent directly from the nominator.

  • Personal statement, not to exceed two (2) pages, summarizing the applicant's contributions demonstrating excellence in research, communication, and leadership. The focus should be on the postdoctoral training period. The application review committee will keep in mind that postdoctoral trainees at different stages of their training will have different degrees of accomplishments and will weigh these specifics accordingly.
  • Postdoc's CV.

Application Limitations: Each postdoctoral scholar can receive only one such award during their tenure at UTSA. There are no limits to how many times each person can apply, as long as they have not been presented with this award before.

Application closes: September 7, 2021
Award presentation: September 23, 2021

Application Review: A panel of faculty from UTSA will review each application and select two recipients.
