Basic Degree Information/Description
The Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision is intended to prepare professionals for future careers in research, academic and clinical settings. Graduates of this program will be given the opportunity to acquire both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills needed to work in counselor education programs and to supervise the next generation of counselor educators as they practice their own skills. Students will be expected to formulate their own philosophy and approach to the counseling education field. The need for multicultural competencies in applied clinical settings will be emphasized throughout the program.

|Required Degree||A master’s degree in counseling or in a related mental health field requiring a minimum of 60 semester credit hours equivalent to the master’s degree requirements of the UTSA Counseling program and/or Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Preference will be given to graduates of CACREP accredited master’s programs.|
|Other Degree Requirements||Students with fewer than 60 semester credit hours may be considered for admission to the program with conditional status, pending completion of the deficient hours and satisfactory completion of courses fulfilling CACREP core course requirements.|
|General University Requirements||Must meet university wide requirements.|
|Application||A completed a Graduate School application.|
|Transcripts||Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English.|
|Resume or Curriculum Vitae||Professional résumé listing prior experiences in the field of counseling.|
|Letters of Recommendation||Three letters of recommendation attesting to the student’s academic and personal attributes for success in the program and potential for contributing substantially to a field of study related to the degree.|
|Statement of Purpose||A written personal statement/essay describing research interests and purpose for pursuing the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision.|
|Test Scores||General GRE, not older than five years.
|Evaluation of Foreign Credentials||All applicants including non-U.S. citizens (International), U.S. citizens (Domestic), or permanent residents who have earned university-level credit from foreign institutions are required to submit an evaluation from an approved Foreign Credential Agency of transcripts from all foreign institutions attended. If official transcripts are used in the foreign credential evaluation, the official transcript requirement will be considered met. However, if unofficial documents are used in the foreign credential evaluation, final official transcripts must be sent to UTSA.
|International Applicants||Must meet international graduate student admission requirements
Documented experience in a work environment (formal positions or internships) where counseling was the primary professional emphasis (may include but not limited to one-on-one counseling, counseling for couples, psychological assessment and testing, group or community counseling).
Successful completion of a finalist interview and rank order selection by the departmental faculty.
