Basic Degree Information/Description
The Master of Science (M.S.) degree program in Geology offers students the opportunity for advanced study and research in the field of Geology. For degree information, please see the degree website listed below. Qualified students are encouraged to apply for teaching and/or research assistantships and fellowships. Requests should be addressed to the Chair of the Department of Geological Science when application is made for admission to UTSA. The Master of Science degree program in Geology offers opportunities for advanced study and research designed to prepare students for roles in industry, government, research institutes, or educational institutions.
Why pursue an M.S. in Geology at UTSA?
The department pursues research and teaching in the key areas of hydrogeology (water resources, aqueous geochemistry), geobiology (paleontology and geomicrobiology), geoinformatics (geospatial analysis, GIS, remote sensing), and land dynamics (geomorphology, environmental geology, sedimentology).

Admission Requirements and Deadlines
- Bachelor's degree in Geology (equivalent to UTSA's) or a bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, life sciences, or engineering with sufficient coursework in the geosciences. Background or remedial courses may be required to remove deficiencies. Applications lacking these requirements will be asked to complete the deficiencies in their program. Applicant's evaluation will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- A degree seeking applicant must meet university wide requirements.
- A complete Graduate Studies application.
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English.
- Test scores: Not required
- 3 Letters of Recommendation are required from person's familiar with the applicant's academic record
- Statement of Purpose: Personal Statement of Research Interest
- Evaluation of Foreign Credentials: All applicants including non-U.S. citizens (International), U.S. citizens (Domestic), or permanent residents who have earned university-level credit from foreign institutions are required to submit an evaluation from an approved Foreign Credential Agency of transcripts from all foreign institutions attended. If official transcripts are used in the foreign credential evaluation, the official transcript requirement will be considered met. However, if unofficial documents are used in the foreign credential evaluation, final official transcripts must be sent to UTSA.
- An approved evaluation requires a detailed course-by-course evaluation. Summaries will not be accepted.
- The Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA) is a private corporation that provides evaluations of foreign school credentials. The application is available at: Application for Credentials Evaluation.
- IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5.
- TOEFL: Minimum scores of 79 or 60 for Internet or paper versions, respectively.
Additional Requirements: A degree seeking applicant must meet international graduate student admission requirements.

- Former students work at environmental and engineering consulting firms (e.g., Hurd Enterprises, San Antonio, TX; Parsons Engineering, Denver, CO), petroleum exploration companies (e.g., Noble Energy, Houston), and Southwest Research Institute.
- Some students pursue doctoral degrees.
