Basic Certificate Description
This 12-hour Certificate in Bilingual Counseling (CBC) is designed to meet the needs of students interested in developing foundational skills in bilingual counseling with an emphasis on Spanish.
The Certificate in Bilingual Counseling (CBC) is to be offered through the Department of Counseling (COU) with support from the Department of Bicultural and Bilingual Studies (BBL). Both departments reside in the College of Education and Human Development. The Department of Counseling will bear ultimate responsibility for the certification program. The certificate represents the efforts of the Department of Counseling to work with other departments and to further UTSA’s institutional mission in providing extended specialized skill development in bilingual counseling. Furthermore, the certificate meets growing PK-12 school and community needs.
Why pursue a Graduate Certificate in Bilingual Counseling?
According to the U.S. Census, 63.2% of San Antonio’s population identifies as Hispanic or Latino. Moreover, in 45.4% of these homes a language other than English is spoken and in 44% of the homes where a language other than English is spoken, the other language is Spanish. Thus, the local population of Spanish-speaking clients is high and deserves particular attention to their linguistic service needs.
The goals of this certificate are to address this dilemma by meeting the growing need for improved bilingual counselor education. The certificate coursework provides students with a strong linguistic background in Spanish and forwards opportunities to learn about cultural factors impacting the Latino/a culture. Additionally, the certificate focuses on improving language skills, and targets opportunities to apply this learning to relevant counseling contexts via supervised counseling experience with Spanish-speaking clients.
Admission Requirements and Prerequisites
- Admission to the M.Ed. in School Counseling, M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision program
- Attainment of Level 2 or Level 3 on a Department of BBL Spanish proficiency test, specifically developed for this program (students may be allowed to take BBL 5023 and COU 7283 before passing the language assessment at the discretion of the Education Specialist III with the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies)
- Additionally the program will be open to non-degree seeking licensed professional counselors (LPC) and certified school counselors who would like to obtain the certification
Departmental requirements include:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in an approved area of study (e.g., psychology, education).
Admission to the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, M.Ed. in School Counseling, or Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision program or already have a LPC or school counseling certification.
Successful completion of a state-mandated Spanish proficiency test (e.g. Texas Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test - Spanish).
A minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last two years of work toward the bachelor’s degree.
To maintain enrollment in the certificate program, students should maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout tenure in the program.
Be in good standing at the last institution attended.

|Evaluation of Foreign Credentials||All applicants including non-U.S. citizens (International), U.S. citizens (Domestic), or permanent residents who have earned university-level credit from foreign institutions are required to submit an evaluation from an approved Foreign Credential Agency of transcripts from all foreign institutions attended. If official transcripts are used in the foreign credential evaluation, the official transcript requirement will be considered met. However, if unofficial documents are used in the foreign credential evaluation, final official transcripts must be sent to UTSA.
