Music (M.M.)

Basic Degree Information/Description

The Master of Music degree program in the Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The Master of Music degree offers the opportunity for advanced study for qualified students who wish to emphasize in several areas. Students may emphasize in instrumental or choral conducting, vocal or instrumental performance, music education, or piano or vocal Pedagogy. The Master of Music degree is designed to develop and foster high achievement in performance and teaching; to prepare the student for a career as a performer, conductor, or educator; or to serve as a basis for pursuing doctoral studies in music.

Admission Prerequisites:

 Required Degree Bachelor of Music degree or Bachelor of Music Education degree with a major in their intended area of graduate emphasis or the equivalent.
Other Degree Requirements  None.
Application Requirements:
 General University Requirements Must meet university wide requirements.
 Application A completed a Graduate School application.
 Transcripts Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English.
 Resume or Curriculum Vitae Not required.
 Letters of Recommendation Three letters of recommendation from established professionals commenting on the appropriateness of graduate study in music for the applicant.
 Statement of Purpose A statement of intent concerning graduate school.
 Test Scores Not required.
 Evaluation of Foreign Credentials

All applicants including non-U.S. citizens (International), U.S. Citizens, and permanent residents who have earned university-level credit from foreign institutions are required to submit official transcripts along with an evaluation of the transcripts from Foreign Credentials Service of America

  • An approved evaluation requires a detailed course-by-course evaluation. Summaries will not be accepted.
  • Foreign credential evaluations must be received by the application deadline for your application to be processed.

 International Applicants Must meet international graduate student admission requirements
  • IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5.
  • TOEFL: Minimum scores of 79 or 60 for Internet or paper versions, respectively.
 Other

Choral and Instrumental Conducting

Provide a recent 20-30 minute video (private YouTube link) demonstrating the level of mastery in a rehearsal and performance situations.

Music Education

Submit a 20 minute digital video of classroom teaching (private YouTube link), documentation of teaching experience (résumé or curriculum vita), and a self-composed short essay (1-2 pages) that describes the reasons for becoming a teacher, commitment to music education, and future career goals.

Instrumental Performance

Audition in person (or with acceptable justification approved by the auditioning committee provide a recent high quality recording via private YouTube link) demonstrating the level of mastery in the proposed performance medium.

Vocal Performance

Provide a recent video of a minimum of two selections (private YouTube link) demonstrating the level of mastery in the proposed medium for pre-screening.

Piano Performance and Pedagogy

Audition in person (or with acceptable justification approved by the auditioning committee provide a recent high quality recording via private YouTube link) demonstrating the level of mastery in the proposed pedagogy and performance medium.

Vocal Performance and Pedagogy

Provide a recent video of a minimum of two selections (private YouTube link) demonstrating the level of mastery in the proposed medium for pre-screening.
