TOEFL & IELTS
The TOEFL or IELTS is required for all international applicants. Please refer to the program requirements and Graduate Catalog for more information on the specific programs. We highly recommend all applicants take the required entrance exam two months prior to the application deadline.
International applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency before being admitted into a graduate program. If you have not taken the TOEFL/IELTS or if your score is more than two years old, you will need to take the exam and submit the official score prior to your application's review at the department for the program.

Transcripts & Marksheets
All transcripts, marksheets or academic records must be official documents and must be accompanied by certified translations into English. Original documents that have not been issued by the college or university should be notarized by the issuing institution. For international transcripts, The Graduate School may request an official document verifying degree completion, as not all official international transcripts include this information. This will be determined on a case by case basis.
The following requirements must be met:
- Issued by recognized educational institutions
- Signed by, and bear the seal of, authorized officials
- Must be clear and legible documents of precise word-for-word English translations of a foreign language documents
- Adhere to the standards (language and format) of the issuing institution; All documents are subject to verification
- All documents received by UTSA become the property of UTSA and will not be released to the applicant
- UTSA evaluates credentials earned through formal academic training only. Documentation of short-term professional development courses or other non-formal, non-academic training with their application, as such documents will not be evaluated.
Some academic institutions can take several weeks to provide transcripts so applicants may want to request their transcript at the earliest possible moment.
UTSA realizes that applicants might be concerned that the institutions that they attended may not respond in a timely manner. In our experience, the large majority of academic institutions across the world furnish documents and verify them on request because they wish to help their graduates and alumni gain international recognition for their credentials. UTSA advises prospective applicants to request their credentials and submit their applications as early as possible so that it may be completed in a timely manner.
