November’s GPS Career Story will introduce Dr. Julia Kent, who has a Ph.D. in British Literature from Johns Hopkins and an MA in French literature from the University of Paris VII, and is currently the vice president of Best Practices and Strategic Initiatives at the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS). Dr. Kent has conducted research on a broad range of topics in graduate education, including Ph.D. career pathways, diversity issues, and the preparation of future faculty. Learn how Dr. Kent shaped her path from literature graduate student to Assistant Professor in Beirut to a leader who shapes graduate education.

October’s GPS Career Story will introduce Ms. Margaret (Maggie) Nettesheim-Hoffman who is working on her Ph.D. in American History at Marquette University and also working as Director of Marquette’s Career Diversity Initiative. Maggie’s current scholarly work explores the development of philanthropic foundations and political conversations impacting the construction of nonprofit sector policy in Wisconsin. She is also the Associate Director of Career Diversity with Humanities Without Walls and can describe how time spent as a Fellow at Humanities Without Walls helped to shape her career path.

Graduate Student Highlight: NSF Fellowship Recipient pursues PhD at UTSA to preserve Amazonian culture

Hugo Lucitante is a member of the indigenous Cofán people, a small Amazonian nation afflicted by colonization, deforestation, and pollution from the oil industry. At just 10 years old, he was given the opportunity to pursue a western education and become an advocate for his people. Now, an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship recipient, he continues his education and research as an Anthropology doctoral candidate at UTSA. Lucitante brings a unique perspective to the Anthropology field and aims to support his people in their fight for cultural survival.
