Social Justice Transdisciplinary Team Grand Challenge

The Graduate School and the Office of Inclusive Excellence are pleased to announce the next Transdisciplinary Team Grand Challenge: Social Justice. The events of 2020 have exposed to many people that disparities by race, gender, economic station, and region in access to healthcare, housing, education, and employment continue to be highly prevalent across society. Issues of this magnitude cannot be solved by researchers in an individual discipline alone. Therefore, the goal of this challenge is to assemble teams of UTSA graduate students from various disciplines that will develop proposals for transdisciplinary concept projects to come up with solutions for current issues of discrimination and equity in today's society.

Teams should be formed in groups of 3-5 students from at least two different programs in two different colleges. Student groups will work together on a transdisciplinary proposal to address an issue associated with social justice. Project proposals can cover a wide variety of topical areas, including but not limited to immigration, criminal justice and policing, access to healthcare, labor practices such as hiring and wages, and more.

Awards:

It is anticipated that three teams will be awarded, subject to available resources.

  • Each student in the top three teams will receive a $2,000 scholarship to be awarded by the Spring 2021 semester.

If you are interested in competing in the challenge, please make sure you are eligible and understand the guidelines and deadlines:

  • An applicant may not participate on more than one proposal to this program.
  • Proposals must demonstrate collaboration among at least three graduate students from different disciplines at UTSA and across at least two colleges. Projects should, whenever possible, include a community partner (click here for more information).
