Welcome to spring 2021 Graduate Student Appreciation Week (GSAW). GSAW is held every year and is UTSA's way to make sure graduate students know how much we appreciate you! We hope you enjoy the week's workshops, socials, games, research-focused activities, and other fun and interactive virtual events. Campus partners include: The Graduate School, University Career Center, UTSA Libraries, The Writing Center, First Generation and Transfer Student Center, the College of Business, and International Student Services.

EVENT: Graduate Student Appreciation Week Kick-Off
DESCRIPTION: The Graduate School kicks off Spring 2021 Graduate Student Appreciation Week with a Welcome from the Graduate School Vice Provost and Dean and the Graduate and Postdoctoral Success team. We will also provide an overview of the week's virtual events. Amazon gift cards to the first 10 students who register and attend this virtual kick-off event!

EVENT: Speed Networking Event
DESCRIPTION: Join us on the Preciate platform for a fun, casual, and interactive speed networking experience! Meet new people and build relationships with peers who share your academic, professional, and personal interests.

EVENT: Leadership 101
DESCRIPTION: Developing leadership skills and a leadership philosophy is integral to career success!  Attendees will learn how to use different leadership styles in a variety of situations and will more fully understand the leadership tenets of integrity, transparency, inclusivity and respect. In addition, attendees will be able to explain the differences between managers and leaders and how effective leadership is defined. Join John Shaffer from the Graduate School for this professional development session and earn a micro-credentialing badge along the way!

EVENT: Share Your First-Gen Graduate Story (Social Media)
DESCRIPTION: Share your First-Gen Graduate Student Story with us and be highlighted on our instagram page! Please submit a photo, tell us why you are proud to be first-gen, and anything else you would like to share. We would like to celebrate all of your achievements and show other first-gen graduate students that their academic dreams are possible.

EVENT: The Skillful Orator
DESCRIPTION: Become a skillful public speaker! Join John Shaffer with the Graduate School as he discusses effective communication skills when presenting your research. Topics will include overcoming public speaking anxiety, making the best first impression when giving a presentation, identifying and minimizing bad habits, and developing an effective elevator pitch. Students who attend will have the opportunity to earn a micro-credentialing badge.

EVENT: Parade of Pets (Social Media)
DESCRIPTION: Parade your pets on social media so that everyone can enjoy! Share pictures of your fur babies on social media and tag #UTSAGSAW21. The post with the most likes will receive UTSA Graduate School swag.

EVENT: Virtual Happy Hour and Cocktail Demo
DESCRIPTION: Enjoy a casual virtual happy hour with UTSA Librarians and a demo for a classic cocktail (recipe to be revealed to all who register) from our Special Collections Mexican Cookbook Collection. Gather your ingredients, mix your own beverage, and learn about our internationally recognized Mexican Cookbook Collection.

DESCRIPTION: Are you a Game of Thrones fan!?  Take part in our Second Friday trivia event where Dr. Tracey Baas will test your knowledge on everything GoT, including leadership lessons learned from the series. The winner of this fun trivia event will receive the book Win or Die: Leadership Secrets from Game of Thrones and a $25 gift card.

EVENT: 3MT Finals Competition
DESCRIPTION: Graduate students will present their research in 3 minutes or less and with only one (1) static powerpoint slide! Register to attend, watch, and support the top 20 3MT finalists competing for one of the top 3 spots. You will also have the opportunity to vote on People's Choice.
