The Graduate Mentoring Program (GMP) is a structured professional development initiative designed to equip postdoctoral scholars and graduate students with the essential skills and experience for effective and supportive mentorship. The program integrates the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) Entering Mentoring curriculum with the National Center for the Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) mentoring network principles to promote culturally aware and evidence-based mentorship practices.
Through a series of interactive workshops, seminars and hands-on training sessions, participants develop key mentoring competencies across three core areas:
Part 1. Fundamentals of Mentorship : Understanding mentor–mentee relationships and rethinking mentorship models and roles
Part 2. Building a Mentoring Network: developing individualized mentoring networks (based on NCFDD guidelines), identifying personal and professional needs and expanding support systems and mentoring communities
Part 3. CIMER Entering Mentoring curriculum and competencies: Participants engage in case studies, role-play, peer mentoring and reflection exercises while mastering the six core competencies:
By the end of the program, participants will develop an inclusive mentoring philosophy, strengthen their readiness for faculty and leadership positions and contribute to a culture of mentorship across UT San Antonio. Participants who complete the program will also earn a stackable microcredential recognizing their mastery of evidence-based mentoring practices.
